Resilient Livelihoods Training

INTRODUCTION

Secure livelihoods are characterized by households that have different activities within the community that provide income, shelter, and other factors to ensure their well-being. This ensures that the society has adequate resources to fall back on in times of need.

Livelihood security can be promoted through improving diversity and security of resources, skills, and technologies that are available to agricultural communities. This training event is therefore intended to enable households, communities, and countries build resilience so as to strengthen their ability to manage change by maintaining or transforming their living standards in the face of shocks or stresses without compromising their long-term prospects.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Gain basic skills in livelihoods.
  • Improve home-based livelihood opportunities for the rural poor.
  • Acquire knowledge on agricultural livelihoods.
  • Gain skills on cross-cutting roles in building livelihood resilience.
  • Develop and describe how GIS can be used to study climate change and its consequences.
  • Apply GIS as a decision support tool for climate change, agriculture and food security.
  • Assess spatial data availability and understand the importance of spatial data infrastructure, for data sharing by organizations involved in; climate change, disaster reduction, agriculture and food security.

This course is intended for various Experts in Agriculture; Extension Officers, Agricultural officials and Decision makers working with local people, in governments, donor organization, Non-profit oriented organizations for Agriculture Development programmes.

  • Disaster Risk Reduction for food and nutrition security
  • Building livelihoods resilience in agriculture
  • Effects of food security threats and constraints to agrarian change and rural development

Cross-cutting roles in building livelihood resilience

  • Capacity development role
  • Gender equity role
  • Role of strategic partnerships  in strengthening livelihoods
  • Role of technology in enhancing livelihood support options
  • Role of government and other development agencies
  • Role of community  participatory programs

Climate-Smart livelihoods management and application of GIS techniques

  • GIS and Remote Sensing concepts in the context of climate change 
  • GIS project design and setup for various programs
  • Sources of GIS data for climate change
  • Basic use of QGIS Software in climate change adaptation
  • Integrating data from different sources into QGIS

 Data collection and analysis

  • Climate change vulnerability and adaptation indicators
  • Using handheld GPS devices for field data collection
  • Mapping areas of climate change
  • GIS as decision support tool for Climate Change
  • Data interpretation for preparedness and  future reference

GENERAL NOTES

·       This course is delivered by our seasoned trainers who have vast experience as expert professionals in the respective fields of practice. The course is taught through a mix of practical activities, theory, group works and case studies.

·       Training manuals and additional reference materials are provided to the participants.

·       Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a certificate.
