Harnessing Nature's Power: Training Course On Ecosystem-based Adaptation For Climate Resilience

Introduction

Climate change presents an unprecedented global challenge, with far-reaching impacts on ecosystems and human populations. Traditional approaches to adaptation, often focused on hard infrastructure, can be costly and may not fully address the complex and interconnected nature of climate risks. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) offers a powerful and cost-effective alternative, utilizing the services provided by healthy ecosystems to help communities adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and build long-term resilience.

This essential training course explores the principles and practices of Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, demonstrating how the conservation, sustainable management, and restoration of natural ecosystems can provide crucial buffers against climate impacts. By understanding the intricate relationships between ecosystems and climate vulnerability, participants will gain the knowledge and skills to design and implement nature-based solutions that protect communities from hazards like floods, droughts, and coastal erosion, while also delivering numerous social, economic, and environmental benefits. This program is vital for anyone seeking to integrate ecological approaches into climate change adaptation strategies.

Target Audience

  • Environmental managers and conservation practitioners
  • Climate change adaptation professionals and policymakers
  • Community development workers and NGO staff
  • Urban and rural planners
  • Natural resource managers and foresters
  • Researchers and academics in environmental science and climate change
  • Project managers involved in climate resilience initiatives

Course Objectives

  • Understand the concept and principles of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA).

  • Understanding how forests mitigate flood risk and regulate water flow; this module focuses on forest hydrology.
  • The role of wetlands in buffering against floods and purifying water.
  • How coastal ecosystems (mangroves, coral reefs) protect against storm surges and sea-level rise; this module covers coastal protection.
  • Adaptation services provided by grasslands and agricultural ecosystems; this module includes rural land.

Module: Assessing Climate Risks and Ecosystem Vulnerability

  • Methodologies for assessing climate hazards relevant to ecosystems and communities.
