Workshop On Nutrition Sensitive Programming And Nutrition Resilience Programming

INTRODUCTION

In the pursuit of secure livelihoods, households often engage in various community activities that provide income, shelter, and other essential resources to ensure their well-being. This training program empowers households, communities, and nations to build resilience, enhancing their ability to maintain or transform living standards in the face of shocks or stresses without compromising their long-term prospects. The course introduces the core principles of nutrition-sensitive programming and offers guidelines for designing programs that promote access to nutrient-rich foods and dietary diversity, vital components of a resilient society.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the social and economic impacts of malnutrition and identify strategies to break the cycle of malnutrition.
  • Understand the connection between agricultural value chains and food systems, and how these relationships influence nutrition.
  • Navigate the enabling environment that supports the operation of nutrition pathways.
  • Employ a four-step approach to designing effective nutrition-sensitive activities.
  • Develop skills in cross-cutting roles crucial for building nutrition resilience.

This course is particularly beneficial for professionals involved in livelihoods, food security, economic growth, nutrition, and maternal and child health. It is also ideal for agriculture experts, extension officers, agricultural officials, and decision-makers working with local communities, government bodies, donor organizations, and non-profit entities focused on agricultural development programs.

Module 1: Introduction to Nutrition-Sensitive Programming and Nutrition Resilience Programming

  • Overview of key concepts in nutrition-sensitive programming and nutrition resilience.

Module 2: Basic Nutrition Concepts

  • Understanding micronutrient malnutrition.

  • The five forms of malnutrition and their implications.
  • The critical needs of infants, children, and mothers, particularly during the "first 1,000 days" from conception to a child's second birthday.
  • Strategies for interrupting the cycle of malnutrition.

Module 5: Connecting Agriculture to Nutrition

  • Conceptual pathways that link agriculture to nutrition.
  • Detailed exploration of the Pathways Model, including the Income Pathway and Women's Empowerment Pathways.
  • Expanding the Pathways Model to include value chains for nutrition.

Module 6: Designing Effective Nutrition-Sensitive Activities

  • A four-step approach to crafting effective nutrition-sensitive activities.
  • Identifying nutrition-sensitive outcomes relevant to participants' market systems development activities.
  • Developing strategies, interventions, and indicators to include in activity design.
  • Planning the next steps for implementation and monitoring.

Module 7: Introduction to Nutrition Resilience

  • Basic concepts and definitions of nutrition resilience.
  • Key factors impacting nutrition resilience in developing countries.
  • Techniques for measuring nutrition resilience and key indicators.

Module 8: Agricultural Livelihoods

  • Identifying constraints to sustainable agricultural development.
  • Addressing threats to food and nutrition security.
  • Strategies for disaster risk reduction in food and nutrition security.
  • Approaches to building nutrition resilience within agricultural practices.

Module 9: Cross-Cutting Roles in Building Nutrition Resilience

  • Gender equity and its role in enhancing nutrition outcomes.
  • The importance of strategic partnerships in strengthening nutrition.
  • Leveraging technology to support nutrition interventions.
